My Dance Career: Q&A with Rosanna Smith

This weekend we had the pleasure of chatting to our brilliant Saturday teacher, Rosanna. We asked her all about her career in Dance, so you can get to know a little bit more about her!

Q: When did you start dancing?
A: I started Ballet when I was 3 years old.

Q: What made you decide you wanted a career in dance?
A: I never had to think about it! From a young age, my free time was spent attending dance classes. I practically lived at my dance school. At 18, I was so excited to leave secondary education so I could spend everyday dancing!

Q: What training did you do and where did you do it?
A: As a child I learnt both ISTD and RAD Ballet, ISTD Modern and Tap. In addition I did contemporary and jazz lessons too. I took as many classes as I could possibly fit into my week. I would attend all day on a Saturday and attend Youth Theatre on Sundays.

I moved to London when I was 18 to train as a professional dancer at The London Studio Centre. I trained in multiple styles of dance as well as singing and acting.  My passion has always been Musical Theatre.

I went on to train as a dance teacher and hold qualifications with the ISTD.

Q: What are your favourite things about working in the dance industry?
A: It doesn’t feel like work… I get to dance everyday!
I love seeing the joy dance brings to everyone. It’s also incredibly rewarding to watch students progress in not only technique but confidence too.

Q: What advice would you give for those thinking of working within the dance industry?
A: Be kind to yourself! All you can ever do is your best. Seize every opportunity that comes your way, no matter how small. Persistence and determination!
